Construction varies by model, but most smokeless fire pits feature double walls and secondary combustion holes to stop the production of smoke, and they can run on wood, charcoal or pellets. "Smokeless fire pits are a great option for people who are sensitive to smoke, live in a place with limited outdoor space or live close to neighbors and don't want to bother them with smoke," says Mallory Micetich, a home care expert at Angi. "Many smokeless fire pits are portable, making them a great option for those who want to bring warmth with them wherever they go, from camping to a friend's backyard party."

If you’re looking to upgrade your backyard setup, our top pick overall is the Solo Stove Yukon 2.0, a bestseller with a sleek look and sturdy build. To determine the best smokeless fire pits on the market, we first consulted Mallory Micetich, a home care expert at Angi, for input on what to look for in these useful backyard accessories. Then, we dove into the category, identifying the most popular smokeless fire pits from trusted brands. After inspecting each model's overall construction, we considered factors like size, durability and value. We also factored in customer reviews to ensure the models on our list perform well in various homes and environments.

While smokeless fire pits tend to be more expensive than their traditional counterparts, many people believe their convenience and smoke-free design to be worth the extra cost. With traditional pits, smoke constantly billows up, sticking to your clothes and hair in the process. They also require you to move around to avoid wafts of smoke that blow along with the wind. That said, smokeless fire pits aren't right for everyone. For example, if you’re in the market for something to keep you warm on chilly nights, you may be better off with a standard pit, which give off more heat than their smokeless counterparts.

First up, it's important to clarify that smokeless fire pits are not usually 100% smokeless. "It just means the amount of smoke is so low that you can't typically notice it," Micetich says. So how, exactly, do this work? Micetich explains: "Smokeless fire pits have a unique double-wall design that gives them their namesake. As the fire burns inside the pit, the walls heat up and hot air rises between the walls. From there, the air is pulled in through vents in the fire pit." That heated oxygen then mixes with the smoke, which burns once more in a process called secondary combustion.

If you love the woody smell traditional fire pits give off but you hate dodging and smelling like smoke, don't worry: Because smokeless fire pits do give off a small amount of smoke, they often have a slightly earthy, burnt aroma. That said, it doesn't compare to the scents that real bonfires give off. "You might smell a little bit of smoke, but it should be barely noticeable," Micetich says.
