We are playing central heating chicken this year, putting off the great switch-on, and many households have sworn to make the month of October CH-free. This means the hearth is taking on a new importance — or reclaiming its old significance — as the focus of the living room. Mantel lust never quite left us, but in the minimalist Nineties and into the Noughties the fashion was to strip out old mantelpieces in favour of less messy, less fussy heating solutions. Now, in the throes of a maximalist revival (and an energy crisis), our desire for a fireplace has been rekindled. A fancy feature, and an extra shelf to dress, could not be more welcome. All hail the return of the decorative mantelpiece.
